Theological Education

The subject of theological education primarily addresses the organization, administration, and teaching of higher education institutions offering graduate degree programs for students engaged in theological studies and/or preparing for ministry vocations. This guide was created and is maintained with our Board of Trustees in mind, though anyone with an interest in theological education may find it useful.

When initiating searches in the library’s online catalog or online databases, the following search terms may be helpful:

•   Theology--Study and teaching 
•   Theological seminaries 
•   Seminarians 
•   Theological seminary trustees 
•   Religious education 

Many of the books on theological education in the Schaff Library collection may be found browsing the call number range BV 4019 to BV 4180, specifically:

•  BV 4020 - General works on training for the ordained ministry
•  BV 4030 - General works on theological seminaries in the United States
•  BV 4166 - Administration and trusteeship of theological schools

There are a few periodicals that publish regularly about theological education:

•  Theological Education, a journal of the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada. Print issues are available at the library, full text is available to LTS users from the Atla Religion Database with AtlaSerials PLUS . 
•  In Trust, a magazine of the In Trust Center for Theological Schools. Print issues are available at the library, full text is available to LTS users from the publisher's website.
